Mel, are you still hanging out with these losers? You don't need them. Why don't you leave with me?

—Spook

Spook is the alter-ego of Gyendal Ravenfoot, created in an attempt to deceive Mel into leading him to the Orb of Death during the events of Aveyond 3-3: The Lost Orb. Spook presents himself as a brooding and cutthroat rogue. He joins Mel's party throughout their quest but doesn't get along very well with them, besides Mel herself. Spook's ulterior goals were to take the Orb of Death for himself and isolate Mel from her friends and make her use the Orb of Death for him.

Biography[]

Aveyond 3-3: The Lost Orb[]

Soon after Gyendal boke out of prison and left Thais, he caught up to Mel and her party. He originally intended to simply follow them to the Orb of Death and then fight them head-on, but reconsidered after Nox told him to adopt a different approach or he would never have his vengeance or the Orb of Death. Soon after, he used his magic to change his appearance to that of his chosen alter ego, Spook, and then changed his behavior to reinforce the disguise. Spook immediately travelled to Peliad to befriend Mel and join her on her quest for the Orb of Death.

Spook first encountered Mel at the quill shop, where she attempted to purchase a quill for Ulf. When the shopkeeper refused to sell Mel a quill, Mel stormed off in frustration. Spook then took a quill, approached Mel outside the quill shop and handed her a quill. Mel thanked Spook for his gift, and the pair introduced themselves. Spook presented himself as a thief from the streets of Peliad, and told Mel to meet him at the tavern if she ever needed anything from him.

Spook proceeded to aid Mel and her party in their adventure to obtain the Orb of Death. When Mel and her party encountered a seeming dead end on their way to Harakauna, Spook cleaered away vines that had concealed a path leading up to Blueleaf Forest, which lay on the way there.

When Mel finally reached a pair of stone lions that destroyed anything that cane within their gaze, she finally went to the Peliad tavern to enlist Spook's help. Spook again attempted to tempt Mel into abandoning her friends, but she still refused. Mel explained that she needed Spook's help in solving the puzzle at the Stonetooth Cave System, to which Spook agreed to help her solve in exchange for allowing him to travel with Mel and her party.

Spook proceeded to fight alongside Mel and her party, but still wishing for her to abandon her other friends to seek the Orb of Death with just him. He never succeeded in persuading her to do this, and so he tolerated the presence of Mel's other party members, acting in a collegial, if not distant, manner around them.

Once Mel's party eventually reached the Orb of Death, he attempted to persuade Mel to keep the Orb of Death, telling her that she could sell the artifact for a large sum of money. However, Mel's resolve prevailed and she raised the Orb to destroy it. Spook then used magic to steal the Orb of Death from Mel and dispensed of his persona to his true identity, Gyendal Ravenfoot. Gyendal then created a shield around Mel to separate her from her party, and then tried to subdue her. In her anger, Mel channeled a large amount of magic into the Orb of Death, destroying Gyendal's shield and allowing Mel's party to fight off Gyendal. After Gyendal was defeated, he opened a portal and retreated into it, vowing that, "It is never over between us, Darkthrop!"

Personality[]

Spook acts cold and aloof, surrounding himself with an air of mystery. According to his in-game fun fact, Spook likes to make scary faces and chase his companions, demonstrating that he wants to appear intimidating to others, even those who would call him a friend. His appearance and demeanor gives others the impression that he is indeed a cutthroat rogue. However, Spook will sometimes show a softer, kinder side of himself to those whom he wants to befriend, leading some to find him endearing and even attractive.

In reality, Spook's ulterior motives are those of his true identity: the Lord of Twilight Gyendal Ravenfoot. Spook's personality is a carefully crafted façade designed to engender a deep trust in Mel, thereby making her an unwitting pawn in Gyendal's plot to utilize the Orb of Death to conquer the world. Ultimately, Spook's real personality is much like that of the Lord of Twilight: devious, cunning, and even cruel.

Relationships[]

Mel[]

I don't mind helping you out, Mel. We could finish this more quickly if your friends weren't here to slow us down, though.

—Spook

Spook acted uncharacteristically friendly to Mel, aiding her at numerous points in her quest before joining her party, and even giving gifts to her to create a relationship. Throughout his tenure in Mel's party, Spook took the opportunity to offer Mel numerous gifts to win her affection. If Mel accepted these gifts, Spook acted grateful and flattered, and a relationship between the two would gradually flourish throughout Mel's quest. If Mel rejected these gifts, Spook acted offended and would remain relatively distant towards Mel, though still wishing to accompany her to find the Orb of Death. Even though Spook actually hated Mel due to her actions during the events of Aveyond 3-1: Lord of Twilight and Aveyond 3-2: Gates of Night, he repressed his wrath to maintain his cover. Despite this, once he seized the Orb of Death, Gyendal reverted to his true self and betrayed Mel to avenge his defeat as a vampire. Gyendal acted especially cruel if Mel pursues a romance with Spook during her quest as he callously toyed with Mel's feelings just before their second battle.

Nox[]

You are so weak. Even compared to the other humans you are weak.

Do you think I care about your opinion? The only thing that matters is Mel, and what she thinks.

You speak the truth. Why are you not hurrying her towards her destiny?

—Nox & Spook

Nox was the one who gave Gyendal the idea to use subterfuge instead of force to obtain the Orb of Death. Spook thus regarded Nox as a potential ally in his scheme to obtain the Orb of Death. However, he never completely trusted her, and largely ceased to mention or regard her after their initial encounter. The only other interaction Spook and Nox ever had with each other was at Gretchen and Marcello's housewarming party in Underfall, where Nox berated Spook for being so weak and taking so long to guide her to the Orb of Death.

Edward[]

Don't be jealous, prince. Mel can have more than one best friend.

—Spook

Out of all the people travelling with Mel, Spook was the meanest towards Edward, and would constantly insult his noble status much like Mel once did. Spook also recognized Edward as his greatest rival for Mel's friendship and possibly attraction. Spook took measures to signal that he was the superior partner for Mel, especially whenever he offered her gifts. Despite this tension, Spook still travelled alongside Edward throughout Mel's quest for the Orb of Death and refrained from enacting any violence upon him until the Orb was found. Once Spook revealed his true identity, he ceased any pretense of being collegial with Edward, and attacked him like the rest of Mel's party.

Abilities[]

Spook has numerous skills befitting of a rogue; his cunning as a thief allows him to use underhanded tactics to win fights, much like Mel. On top of this, Spook retains the magical prowess of his true identity, though he refrains from utilizing magic at all to maintain his cover while he travels with Mel.
